Apparently over 350 Apple Macbook owners so far have reported an issue in which their new Macbooks are shutting down on their own spontaneously. Many Macbook owners have flocked to Apple’s support forum seeking to find a resolution to the problem. The website http://www.macbookrandomshutdown.com has dedicated itself to discussion on just this problem. Allegedly an IT engineer from Munich, Germany has found the cause of the problem. The engineer is claiming that the issue seems to be caused by the cable between the heat sensor and the CPU’s heat sink being too short. The heat sink expands during operation and makes contact with the sensor cable which then in turn melts the sensor cable’s insulation.
This causes a short circuit which results in the immediate shutdown of the Macbook. As the heat sinks cools it contracts to the point where it is no longer making contact with the sensor cable and breaks the short circuit. At this point the Macbook will once again boot. This process is then repeated as the heat sink becomes hot again during use. As of today a quick search on Apple’s support website did not reveal an obvious resolution for the affected Macbook owners. Apple’s support website is located at http://www.apple.com/support/
