Porsche Unveils Le Mans RS Spyder Prototype

Porsche Le Mans RS Spyder Prototype

Porsche is displaying an improved version of its Le Mans prototype racecar at the Paris auto show. The automaker returned to the prototype racing category in 2006 with the RS Spyder, which is now contesting the American Le Mans Series. The new version shown at Paris will be out in 2007.

The sleek-looking racer prototype sports a 3.4-liter 90-degee V8 engine capable of enduring the rigors of a 1,000-mile race. It was built to be raced not just in the ALMS, but at the European Le Mans Series and the 24-hour French namesake event.

The sequential six-speed gearbox comes with a three-plate carbon-fiber clutch and steering-wheel paddles.

There’s no word yet on when actual testing of the new RS Spyder will begin.
