Ubuntu WINE Cooler Chills Out Microsoft

Ubuntu WINE Cooler Chills Out Microsoft
If Microsoft doesn’t wave a magic wand and release an open source Vista replacement by the end of the year, they may be looking at a serious Windows revolt! I previously published two articles related to Microsoft and Linux. In case you missed them the first time around here they are. The first entitled, “Top 5 Reasons Why You Should NOT upgrade to Windows Vista” and “Is Microsoft Pushing Customers to Linux?”

As I write this post I am in the process of upgrading one of my PC’s from a dual boot Windows 2000/Ubuntu 6.06 LTS platform to Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy. As a former Microsoft fanatic I had only read about Ubuntu’s performance, reliability and ease of use. Let me tell you that I was completed impressed by the Ubuntu 6.06 installation and can now vouch for the shiny, new Linux operating system first hand. It flawlessly detected all of my hardware and never “blue screened” as other O.S. products have been known to do.

After my upgrade to Ubuntu “Edgy” 6.10 is completed I will be celebrating with some WINE. No, not “Mad Dog.” Yes, the WINE install will come next and I will begin to test my favorite and most needed Windows apps on my new Linux buddy. I’m sure it won’t be as easy as I would hope for but it will be stable and reliable when I’m done and it will be free.

Microsoft if you’re listening, “I’ve been with you from day one but these Ubuntu guys have really got their sh*t together!” Take Ubuntu and mix in some WINE and you’ve got yourself a damn stable Linux O.S. that can run Microsoft Windows applications. Ouch! That is a dangerous combination for the folks at Redmond. Microsoft needs to take a serious look at the powerful and talented Linux community (especially Ubuntu) that is growing by leaps and bounds on a daily basis. If Microsoft ignores the fury that’s developing with Ubuntu and Linux and does not respond with something fantastic, they will surely experience the beginning of the demise of Windows.

  1. You’re such a fan boy and it makes me laugh

  2. Fan Boy? That’s not true. I also like cars. Yep. Linux and cars.

  3. Have you even used Wine? It’s good, but it doesn’t run most applications by a long shot. Writing stuff like this only hurts Linux because it gives people the idea that they’ll be able to run all of their windows applications in Linux. That’s simply not true, nor should it be; the applications in Linux are in general cleaner, faster and less bloated than their Windows counterparts.
If Ubuntu does threaten Microsoft, let me promise you it’s not because of Wine.

  4. Yes I have used WINE. Please note that I never stated that it runs all Windows apps. I know that’s not the case. That’s why I stated that I will “test” my favorite Windows apps. Ubuntu and WINE will not be a solution for all but for some it very well may be a great solution. It,s not for everyone at this point however the way both Ubuntu and WINE are progressing this combination may very well be for everyone in the near future.

  5. …until Vista roles around with different APIs and it’s back to page one.
