Tech Notebook: Skype eyes ways to make money from its service
Niklas Zennstrom stopped by the VON Conference in San Jose last week sporting a black eye from a skiing accident - a sign the co-founder of Skype, the online calling service, and Joost, a new online video service, is playing as hard as he’s working.
Still, Skype employees says there’s no sign their chief executive or Janus Friis, his partner in both Skype and Joost, have been distracted by Joost favorites like “The Diddy Channel,” “Indycar,” or “National Geographic.”
At a party Tuesday night, Zennstrom said Skype is experimenting with ways to make money from the service, with the expectation that all phone calls will eventually be free. Among the lab tests: a directory of worldwide businesses created by Skype users, a Skype-enabled labor market and a Skype money service powered by PayPal.
