London based New Medium Enterprises (NME) has developed an HD DVD format that they claim to be the “world’s first low-cost True High Definition solution utilizing today’s Red Laser Technology.”
NME markets the new HD technology under the name HD VMD.
The company states that, “VMD technology is designed to create a disc with many information layers. The current 4-layer VMD 24 (24 GB) is suitable for True High Definition (HD) standard of recording and viewing data, the so-called 1080p format.”
NME apparently doesn’t have plans to compete with the current Blu-ray HD standard, however since they’re able to market HD VMD players which cost about $100 less than a typical Blu-ray disc player, they may want to re-think that strategy.
The company is able to reduce the manufacturing cost of the players since the devices utilize a red laser unlike the more expensive blue laser that is utilized by the Blu-ray disc player. Time will tell if this HD player follows the same fate as Toshiba’s HD DVD.
