One of the most popular premium SUVs is getting a makeover—and you might have to look closely to spot the changes.

One could describe the first-generation Lexus RX as a well-executed Mercedes M-class lookalike on a Toyota Camry platform. The second generation developed a distinct styling language and became the “green” SUV of choice with its available hybrid powertrain.

Now the company is launching the third generation, and we’d describe it as a cautious evolution of the previous model with some Toyota Highlander and Venza styling elements thrown in for good measure. Technology freaks and friends of the Earth will opt for the RX450h, a hybridized 3.5-liter V-6 which runs on the Atkinson cycle and is mated to a CVT transmission. It is rated at 295 horsepower, up from the old RX400h’s 268 hp. Both versions are available with front- or all-wheel drive.
