The next Great Depression could hit as news spreads of the Pontiac G8 ST’s demise. General Motors announced today that the G8 ST—the Chevy El Camino-rehash half-pickup/half-G8 sedan—has been killed before we could do even a single smoky burnout in one.

In the midst of GM’s ongoing financial crisis, the company has said it will be paring its portfolio and focusing on core products, so the news of the niche G8 ST’s cancellation should come as no great surprise. The General is hoping to renew Pontiac as a sporty, fun-to-drive brand, and believes very little about the 361-hp, rear-wheel-drive half-breed says “sporty” to the car-buying mainstream. At least not as much as the Chevy Aveo-based Pontiac G3, anyway.
