Verizon: LTE 4G Handset Tests A Success

The wireless carrier trialed streaming video and file uploads and downloads over its 700 MHz spectrum in Boston and Seattle.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless reported that it has successfully tested LG and Samsung devices on its LTE trial installations in Boston and Seattle. The carrier said it expects future devices to be provided by ST-Ericsson,Motorola (NYSE: MOT), and Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM).

The trials were made over Verizon’s 700 MHz spectrum in the two urban areas and are a prelude to a more complete rollout in those cities later this year, and in advance of Verizon’s commercial deployment of LTE 4G service in up to 30 markets in 2010.

The company said the tests successfully trialed streaming video, file uploads and downloads, as well as Web browsing.

“Verizon Wireless,” said the firm’s Tony Melone in a statement, “is fully committed to harnessing the power of LTE over our 700 MHz spectrum. This significant milestone in our LTE 4G network testing, exemplified by the first data calls in Boston and Seattle, further validates our early support and decision to select LTE as the standard for our next-generation wireless broadband network.” Melone is senior vice president and chief technical officer at Verizon Wireless.
