Hybrid Power for the Next Nissan GT-R?

2010-Nissan-GT-R-5

The bloggers over at Inside Line have a scoop from Japan claiming that the 2013 Nissan GT-R will be offered with hybrid power. The thinking goes that a hybrid form of “Godzilla” would use the 158-hp electric motor setup seen in  the Infiniti Essence concept coupled to the current GT-R’s twin-turbo V-6. Combined output would be about 600 hp with fuel mileage rising to 25–30 mpg. The current GT-R, seen above, offers 480 ponies and 17 mpg city/21 highway.

We don’t yet have any independent confirmation, but it’s not an unprecedented idea. Porsche has been experimenting with a Cayenne hybrid and might consider a hybrid 911, while BMW uses a hybrid drivetrain to squeeze extra performance from the ActiveHybrid 7. Oh, and Formula 1 cars introduced hybrid-like tech called Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (since largely scrapped) to offer increased oomph for passing.

It’s tough to say whether a hybrid GT-R will ever come to fruition, but a number of signs are pointing toward yes. Stay tuned for what could be both the greenest and meanest GT-R.
