Takahashi: Sony’s big gamble at Home

At first look, Sony’s idea to create Home, an online virtual world for PlayStation 3 users, is a powerful concept. Gamers will be able to log into the PlayStation Network, create their own lifelike avatars, move into and decorate a private apartment, and enjoy movies and music and play games with their friends. They can create their own fantasy lives, upload funny videos, and customize their online experience.

Phil Harrison, president of Sony’s worldwide game studios, unveiled Home in a speech at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco Wednesday. In an interview afterward, he said that Sony has been working on the project for 2 1/2 years. It’s a big bet, and it could pay off beyond gaming by attracting people who have been addicted to other services such as MySpace, Second Life or YouTube.
